RPGMaker Trans v2.04 Released

Another new release. Two things:

  1. Support loading patches with a UTF-8 BOM
  2. Support saving patches with a UTF-8 BOM (via an option)
For those who don't know what a UTF-8 BOM is, it's something Microsoft invented to identify UTF-8 documents. It's almost universally not recommended for technical reasons, but certain text editors on Windows require it. Of course, using a UTF-8 BOM on editors that don't require it could break those editors, hence why it's an option and not enabled-by-default.

    2. I apologize for not giving more info than, "it doesn't work."

      No error message, I select the game exe and it doesn't seem to recognize that it does anything, no error just nothingness.

      Windows 7 64bit.

      I understand no longer supporting it going forward, but preventing ver1 from not working altogether?

      Specifically, if I didn't do this, then I wouldn't be able to get 2.x working and I'd have to deal with more bug reports from people using the 1.99 version who didn't bother upgrading. Unfortunately, this was the reality before I killed 1.99 permanently.

      What is the directory that you're trying to patch? What you're saying should work across versions, because this is one area of code which did not change. Also, is there an rpgmktranslated file in your source directory? Because if there is it might interfere (although it shouldn't)

      F:\My Games\RPGV\VH is where the game exe is located

    5. What isn't in the source directory? The source directory is the directory containing the game.

      A long shot, but have you tried not having a space in the directory name (i.e. change the name to something like F:\RPGV\VH?)

    6. Sorry, the patch file isn't in the source directory, it is two folders deeper, but moving it to a separate directory made no difference.

      I just tried moving everything to be just in the main portion of the drive (F:\VH and F:\PATCH), but it still doesn't work.

    7. OK, to clarify the situation:

      1) The problem is that after selecting RPG_RT.EXE in the GUI, nothing happens.
      2) Inside the game folder (F:\VH), there is no file specifically named 'rpgmktranslated' or 'rpgmktranspatch', and there is a file named 'rpg_rt.ldb'. (capitlisation may vary)

      If that's the case, then could you upload your F:\VH directory somewhere and e-mail it to me (habisain at gmail dot com). I've tried to reproduce this bug and failed. To reduce size, you can delete the following folders before uploading: Backdrop, Battle, CharSet, ChipSet, FaceSet, GameOver, Monster, Movie, Music, Panorama, Picture, Sound, System, Title (note - these are the standard RPGMaker folders - anything else is something I may need to look at).

    9. Yeah, I can see the problem straight off. There are two files in the VH directory, one is RPGMKTRANSLATED and the other RPGMKTRANSPATCH (the ones I mentioned before). Not sure how they got there (maybe you tried to patch the game into it's own folder? Not a good idea), but they need to be deleted as one of the effects of those files is to tell RPGMaker Trans that the folder is *not* a source game.

      In all honesty, if you did try patching the game into it's own folder, translation patches won't do anything. You're better off downloading a fresh copy of the game.

  3. v2.04: Linux: Discovered that the program now requires Python 3.3 (magic number 9E 0C = 3230, because you use the second byte first)

    I'll probably want to get that the next time I decide to play (or replay) an RPGMaker game that requires patching.

    1. I'm pretty certain I mentioned that before... Python 3.3 has been used since v2.01, maybe 2.0 final...

      In any case, the reason for the change is that Python 2.7 has some issues on Windows with long/non-ASCII paths. I've never really been able to figure out exactly what the issue is (partly due to difficulty reproducing and narrowing down why it occurs), other than the fact that Python 3 doesn't exhibit it. This is probably due to Python 3's better Unicode handling, but honestly, I don't know that for certain.
